Step OneImageryI-Phone photos of a section of the newly built "Garden Village" development serve as templates for the imagery used.
Step TwoFind EdgesThe "Garden Village" photo is reduced to outlines which will be interpreted and transcribed onto clay slabs specifically prepared to become tiles and plaques.
Step ThreeGarden Village PlaquesAt this stage the "Garden Village" imagery has been transcribed onto white earthenware slabs which were carved, treated with red terra sigillata and fired. After firing, the terra sigillata finish of the plaques is reminiscent of peeling paint on neglected buildings.
Step FourAlternative PurposeBefore the clay plaques were fired, plaster impression were taken. Traditionally these impressions are used to make duplicate tiles, mosaics or plaques. In this case the plaster impressions serve as iterations themselves. They will also serve as models for the next variation on the subject of the "Garden Village".
Step Five Silicone ImpressionsThe beautiful breakthrough of firm white plaster beneath the glossy soft surface of sea foam green silicone could have been an artwork on its own. Instead it became another step in the process of "Garden Village" imagery.Brush-on silicone was used to reproduce in urethane, the hand carved detail of the original clay slabs.
Step SixSimultaneous-Reality-RealtyCast urethane panels made of two part liquid urethane poured into silicone molds affords another opportunity to re-interpret the traditional making of tiles, in a weathered glass like medium.
